Authorities arrested a man last week accused of stealing metal wires from an H-E-B warehouse on the Northeast Side, according to an arrest affidavit.
San Antonio police officers and Texas Rangers identified Edward Joseph Hammonds Jr., 35, as the suspect in the theft, the warrant states.
Hammond arrived at the warehouse near Kirby Middle School on Sept. 5 in a pickup truck and checked in with the facility’s security staff with the name “Jason,” the affidavit said.
The detective who wrote the affidavit said Hammond used a different name to pose as a warehouse repairman, and security let him through just before 10:50 p.m.
Approximately 25 minutes later, the warrant said security cameras showed Hammond leaving the warehouse with H-E-B property in the bed of the truck.
Shortly after midnight on Sept. 6, the affidavit said Hammond drove back to the facility and was allowed on the property after the security staff recognized him from the previous encounter.
However, Hammond saw an armed security guard and ran toward the exit, the affidavit said.
Security footage later showed Hammond speeding in his truck toward the exit around 12:45 a.m. Court documents said he allegedly broke through the security gate to leave the warehouse.
The footage also showed the bed of his pickup truck filled with roughly $40,000 worth of copper and brass wires.
Rangers arrested Hammond on Monday and charged him with theft of copper and brass from critical infrastructure and communication wires, court records show.
He was booked early Tuesday morning on a $30,000 bond and was released the same day, jail records show.
