Moore Air Base is back in the news after many years with the announcement in June by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins that the agency will reopen the facility for its screwworm program.
In the early 1940s, John Shary and other businessmen bought land 10 miles northwest of Mission that would become the air base, and then sold it at cost to the U.S. government, according to a Hidalgo County Historical Commission account. The facility would go on to train thousands of airmen and play a key role in pest eradication efforts.
The old base hasn’t been utilized for decades, but the roadway named for it, Moorefield Road, has always served as a reminder of the airfield.
