I don’t think Lindsey Austen’s first experience with drone delivery went quite the way anyone drew it up. Instead of finding her package waiting somewhere safely in the backyard, she got to watch it descend from the sky and take a dive directly into her swimming pool.
The delivery was caught on video and shared by ABC13 Houston, showing the Amazon drone hovering roughly 10 feet above Austen’s backyard pool. Then, rather than moving toward considerably drier real estate, it released the package directly over the water.
Down it goes, making what might be one of the least convenient deliveries possible without accidentally dropping the package onto the roof. Austen’s reaction afterward pretty much summed up the experience: “I don’t think I’ll be wanting drone deliveries anymore.”
Drone delivery might eliminate the need to wait for someone to walk a package up to your door, but there’s apparently at least one advantage humans still have. Most delivery drivers know a swimming pool isn’t a porch.
Amazon’s Drone Picks the Wettest Possible Landing Spot

The video provided by Storyful and later reposted to Facebook by ABC13 Houston shows the drone slowly descending into Austen’s backyard before hovering several feet above the pool. For a moment, everything looks like a relatively normal futuristic delivery.
Then the package drops.
Rather than landing beside the pool, it falls straight into the water with an immediate splash. Austen can be heard reacting in disbelief as she watches her first drone delivery turn into an unexpected retrieval mission.
ABC13 Houston did not provide details in the post about what was inside the package or whether its contents were damaged. Based on Austen’s reaction, though, she doesn’t seem particularly interested in giving drone delivery another opportunity to redeem itself.
Commenters Think the Drone Just Wanted Her To Go Swimming
Unsurprisingly, commenters had plenty of fun with a drone dropping someone’s order directly into a pool. “Drone here ya go now swim for it,” one person joked, while another decided there was at least one positive: “At least it was a soft landing.”
Some weren’t entirely convinced the drone deserved all the blame, however. One commenter questioned whether the delivery location pin had been placed near the pool, arguing that the drone was going where it had been instructed. Another jokingly wondered why someone would request a delivery while hanging out in the pool.
Then there were the people defending old-fashioned delivery drivers. “A human delivered package doesn’t end up in your pool,” one person argued, although someone else admitted they’ve had human deliveries that were “nearly this bad.”
For Austen, at least, it looks like the humans might be getting the next package.
