HOUSTON (KTRK) — The man accused of causing injuries to a toddler so severe she remains critically hurt appeared in court for the first time on Saturday morning.
Gerardo Gonzalez, 29, made his first appearance before a judge after being arrested and charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child on Friday.

The investigation began after a couple arrived at a gas station on Cypresswood Drive in the Spring area and sought help from law enforcement for an unresponsive 2-year-old.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputies began life-saving measures until EMS arrived, according to the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. The child was taken to a local hospital where staff determined the toddler had multiple life-threatening injuries.
The child was eventually airlifted to another hospital, underwent surgery, and remains in critical condition, according to officials.
The couple directed officials to a house on Rendezvous Court where the investigation determined the mother’s boyfriend allegedly struck the child multiple times, causing the injuries, according to court documents.
Gonzalez allegedly admitted to beating the child, and the child is not expected to survive, according to court documents.
The judge set Gonzalez’s bond at $1 million dollars and, if bond is met, set pre-trial conditions like house arrest and no contact with the victim’s family.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
