Texas Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for 12th DWI Arrest, Says He Was Simply ‘Unlucky’

Texas Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for 12th DWI Arrest, Says He Was Simply ‘Unlucky’—

A Texas man will spend 25 years to life in prison after being arrested and convicted of his 12th DWI.
On Tuesday, July 14, Raymundo Ayala was convicted by a jury of Driving While Intoxicated (3rd or more). According to a press release from the Randall County District Attorney’s Office, a third or subsequent DWI arrest generally turns the crime into a third-degree felony punishable by two to ten years in prison.
After hearing about Ayala’s latest arrest, the jury heard the details of his two prior arrests and “quickly returned a guilty verdict,” according to the press release. When the jury was asked to weigh in on the punishment phase, they learned he had 11 prior DWI convictions and had served prison time for six of them. Because of his extensive history of driving under the influence, he was found to be a habitual offender, which the District Attorney’s Office notes increases the punishment range of his crime to 25 years to life, which the jury handed down.

During the punishment phase, Ayala reportedly testified that he had so many prior convictions because he was “unlucky.”
“This was the first time Ayala had been arrested for a DWI in Randall County, and our office was committed to ensuring it would be the last,” the press release from the District Attorney’s Office reads. “Ayala was ‘lucky’ that his repeated decisions to drive while intoxicated did not result in the loss of innocent lives. Driving While Intoxicated continues to endanger our community, and this sentence sends a clear message: those who repeatedly choose to drink and drive will be held accountable.”
Ayala’s 12th arrest came on August 9, 2025, when a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper observed him committing “multiple traffic violations.” The trooper pulled Ayala over, and the traffic stop quickly became a DWI investigation. The trooper eventually obtained a warrant to test Ayala’s blood and found he had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.213, more than two and a half times the legal limit of .08.
