Texas woman gets 35 years in prison in her newborn’s stabbing death in Weld County—

A Texas woman was sentenced to 35 years in prison after taking a plea deal on second-degree murder charges for fatally stabbing her newborn dozens of times in 2022 in Nunn.

Leiyla Cepeda, 21, was sentenced to 35 years at the Colorado Department of Corrections by Weld County District Court Judge Audrey Galloway during a sentencing hearing on Friday. Cepeda in October pleaded guilty as part of a deal to one count of second-degree murder. Charges of first-degree murder and first-degree murder of a person under 12 by someone in a position of trust were dismissed as part of the deal.

Cepeda will also serve five years of mandatory parole after completing her prison sentence.
