McALLEN — City leaders here have greenlit a plan to use eminent domain to acquire a piece of land for a future expansion of city hall.

The McAllen City Commission unanimously approved pursuing eminent domain for the property at 801 S. Main St. — located south and directly across the street from city hall — during a meeting Monday.

The 1.45-acre piece of land lies on the corner of Main Street and Houston Avenue, abutting an expansive parking lot that the city currently uses as overflow parking for those who work at or visit city hall.
