Cultural connection: Here’s how East Texas is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month—
East Texas communities are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through a variety of events and resource opportunities.
Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long event in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was later extended to a month in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan, according to history.com.
The observance officially began Sept. 15. That date is significant because many Latin American countries celebrate their national independence that day, while other countries’ independence day celebrations follow within the Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 timeframe.
