Texas was supposed to be the dream: low taxes, endless sun, decadent BBQs, and a cost of living that let your nest egg last.
The newest Bankrate study just slammed the brakes on that narrative. The Lone Star State ranks 49th out of 50 states for retirement in 2025, beaten only by Louisiana. The biggest hits coming from health care, safety, affordability, and even the very weather that once sold the move.

Bankrate weighted what retirees say they care about most: affordability (30%), weather (18%), safety (15%), health care (15%).
